Wausa tops Wynot to stay undefeated

WAUSA — The Wynot Blue Devils battled the Wausa Vikings in Wausa Friday and the game turned into a tale of two halves.

The Vikings dominated the first half as they raced to a 36-18 halftime lead. Wynot rallied in the second half to get within five points but Wausa held off the comeback attempt to stay undefeated at 6-0 with the 70-62 win Wynot’s record fell to 4-2 with the loss. This game got ugly at times as it was won at the free throw line. The two teams combined to shoot 85 free throws with the Viking gaining a 35-20 advantage that went a long way in determining the outcome of the game.

In the opening quarter Wynot got a basket each from Andrew Haberman and Justin Heimes. Wausa would get seven points from Mac Carlson and six points from Dalton Baue and got 7-10 from the line to open up a 20-12 advantage.

The second quarter saw the Blue Devils struggle on offense getting a basket each from Justin Heimes and Kotner Koch along with a couple free throws. Wausa got six more points from Carlson, a pair of field goals from Dalton Baue and a three pointer from Brady Bloomquist to lead 36-18.

The Devil defense showed up in the third quarter holding the Viking to a single basket from the field and some free throws. Wynot went on a 17-9 run fueled by 9 points from Kotner Koch, a trey by Devin Brummer and a bucket each by Killian Steinhaus and Jusin Heimes to cut the Viking lead to 45-35.

In the final quarter the Blue Devils cut into the Viking lead from long range. Three pointers by Kotner Koch, Devin Brummer, Cooper Oligmueller cut the Viking lead to five points with 1:50 remaining. Wausa would hold off the Blue Devil comeback attempt with a trey by Brady Bloomquist and a basket each by Mac Carlson and Matthew Schindler and then connecting on 13 of 18 free throws in the final quarter to earn the hard fought 70-62 win.

The Blue Devils next see action in the West Point Beemer Tournament. Wausa plays in the Post Christmas Creighton Tournament.
