Final touches being put on new school addition

HARTINGTON —Acoustic tiles should soon be installed to help deaden the deafening sound in the new Hartington-Newcastle elementary school gym, Hartington- Newcastle School Board members were told Monday.

Representatives from the Sioux Falls, S.D. company that will install them said the tiles should arrive this week and should then be put in place next week.

Supt. A.J. Johnson said right now it’s difficult to hold a conversation in the gym when an activity is going on because of all the noise.

Johnson said lighting and a sound system for the gym stage are also expected to be installed soon.

There are only a few other items that need to be completed before the new school addition project can be considered completed.

Fencing near the playground is nearly complete, he said. Some landscaping work is also being completed.

The Board also approved a proposal Monday from Johnson to provide a cash option benefit for some parttime hourly employees.

Johnson also reported Dana Cole has completed the school audit. The auditors recommended the school district give the Supterintendent regular bill paying authority to pay some reoccuring bills such as utilities ahead of board meetings so they are able to send out on time payments.

Elementary School Principal Sarah Edwards said she is now preparing for parent teacher conferences to be held on Oct 23.
