513 crew swings through Cedar County in their tour across Nebraska

HARTINGTON — A couple of University of Nebraska-Omaha sophomores got tired of all of the free time on their hands when the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to transition from inclass to on-line education last spring.

Seth Varner and Austin Schneider decided to take advantage of their extra time with an impromptu adventure.

They were determined to travel to all 531 communities in the state of Nebraska, and call themselves, “Visit 531 Nebraska”.

“We didn’t have a whole lot to do, so we decided to spend our time doing something memorable,” Varner said.

Varner and Schneider, who are both from Wahoo, are in the process of driving through every nook and cranny of Nebraska to visit all incorporated towns and cities. They hop in the car every few days to see as many historical sites and parks they can along the way to their next destination.

As of last Friday, they had been to 242 towns in eastern Nebraska and traveled 3,903 miles.

On Wednesday, June 10, Visit531 along with their friend, Brooklyn Eckley, made their way to Hartington and Wausa.

Karen Kleinschmidt led the group through the town showing them the Lied Lincoln Township Library, Gladstone Park, the Dala horse welcome sign and the veterans memorial. “One thing we’ve noticed that these small

“One thing we’ve noticed that these small towns have in common is that a lot of them have a veteran’s memorial,” Schneider says, “There is a lot of patriotism in these communities.” After their journey is completed, the boys have

After their journey is completed, the boys have ideas for what they want to do next.

“We have been getting a lot of people telling us to write a book,” says Schneider, “So we want to create a journal-style book with the histories of the towns we’ve been to, along with our experiences and people we’ve met.”

Visit 531 Nebraska posts regular updates on where they are going next, and they can be found on Facebook and Instagram.
