HARTINGTON — Fourteen new MacIntosh computers and four new printers have been bought for the Cedar Catholic schools. Some new software has been installed as well. One software program is an encyclopedia with video sound effects.

HARTINGTON — Five new students have been inducted into the Hartington Public National Honors Society. They are Mary Broderson, Josh Climer, Coreen Dendinger, David Feilmeier and Amy Riggins.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Fire Department was called to battle a blaze at the Frank and Joan Olsen farm. They were unable to contain the fire and it completely destroyed a shed. Luckily, the flames did not spread to any other buildings.

HARTINGTON — The various levies for Cedar County, which include county, Ag Society, Education Service Unit (USU), Northeast Community College, schools, fire districts, cities and villages have been put in place for the 2008 taxes.
The Cedar County Commissioners convened as the Board of Equalization at their Oct. 14 meeting in order to set the levies.
The levy is arrived at by using the budgets that are set by the various taxing entities.

HARTINGTON — A celebration is being held for long-time Cedar County News columnist Joan Burney this Saturday at the Hartington Golf Course.
The celebration is a joint 80th birthday and retirement party. After writing a column every week for the Cedar County News for the past 40 years, Burney has decided to slow down a bit. She vows she is not quitting, but will no longer write weekly.

BOW VALLEY — Sudbeck Service was sold to Clayton and Betty Heimes, who bought the business from their daughter.
The business had been for sale for awhile, but Clayton and Betty weren’t sure if they wanted to make that life change. When they decided to go for it, they thought it would be a great chance to work together.

HARTINGTON — Some new improvements for storage may be on the agenda for the Community Complex at Hartington.
Hartington City Council members agreed Oct. 14 the concession stand at the Community Complex could be improved. Sheila Jueden asked board members if some shelves, cupboards or counters could be put in the concession stand at the Complex.

NEWCASTLE — Residents in the Newcastle community and members of the Newcastle Board of Education are looking at working with the Hartington School District.
Hartington came up as the top choice during a recent community meeting to discuss declining numbers of students at the Newcastle School.
The community meeting was well attended, and quite a few topics were discussed.
“There was a great turn-out at the community meeting. We had around a 100 people. Legal counsel was there to answer any questions,” said Newcastle School Supt. Joey Lefdal. “The direction was clear – they wanted to look at Hartington.”
A Newcastle School Board meeting followed the community meeting, school board members gave their approval on a motion to start discussions with Hartington’s School Board.
“It is an opportunity to meet and start talking with Hartington about,” Lefdal said. “Even though Newcastle has lost state aid, the school is financially okay. The number of students is down and we need to do what is right for the kids.”
