HARTINGTON — An area land owner feels he was treated unfairly when his fence was recently removed from the road right-of-way in southern Cedar County.

Besides having the fence removed, John Thelen, rural Randolph, was also issued a ticket for road obstruction.

Farmers and land owners across the county have been warned numerous times in the last few years that fences and crops are not allowed in the ditch, which is considered part of the county right-of-way.

County Attorney George Hirschbach talked to Cedar County Commissioners during the July 28 meeting about the steps taken to remove the fence and issue the citation.

The land owner had been given notice he needed to remove the fence from the road right-of-way in previous years.

He had met with the commissioners in 2014 after Commissioner Jerry Wiese had removed the fence from the right-of-way.

At that time, he told board members the fence was needed to keep the livestock from getting away from him as he moves them from his homestead to the pasture through the ditch.
