HARTINGTON — Area soldiers who are part of the 189th National Guard Unit are headed home to see family this week before being deployed to Iraq.

Several young men from Northeast Nebraska will soon be on active duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom and be away from their families for over a year.

The unit left Aug. 17 for Fort Riley where they have been training for the work they will be doing in Iraq.

Leander and Lois Lammers of Hartington have two sons who will be returning to Nebraska with the unit. They have been keeping in touch with their sons by cell phone and e-mail. Greg, who has been in the National Guard for 17 years, is married and lives in Norfolk. His younger brother Chris has been with the Guard for three years.
