1990: City of Hartington establishes a Tree Board

HARTINGTON — The Cedar County Courthouse has been officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The listing was published on Jan. 10. The National Register is the nation’s inventory of properties considered to be worthy of preservation, according to the letter to Hartington Mayor Gerald Miller from the Nebraska State Historical Society.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council Monday approved the formation of a Tree Board and appointed three individuals to serve on it.

Appointed were Ken Hochstein, Tom Moser and Duane Arens.

The board was formed to enable the city to take advantage of grant funds which have become available through the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum.

The Arboretum will disburse $500,000 along with technical assistance to 25-30 Nebraska communities under the program.

The Council passed a resolution to donate use of railroad property on the south edge of town for a nature trail and study area.

Hartington Public School instructor Jess Wolf is coordinating the project.

HARTINGTON — The curtain came down on Hartington High’s basketball season Feb. 20 at Randolph when the Wildcats lost to Coleridge, 61-44.

It was the fifth time Hartington has faced Coleridge this season, and the outcome of each meeting was the same.

HARTINGTON — Cedar Catholic moved to the finals with sub-district win. Wynot turned back Coleridge to move to D-1 District final.

YANKTON, S.D.—Riley Arens, son of Jan and Brad Arens, Hartington was awarded a $20,000 college scholarship as part of a promotion sponsored by the Yankton Press and Dakotan and the newspaper’s parent company, Morris Communications. The contest was open to any babies born in the Yankton area from Jan. 1 to Feb. 15, 2000.

CROFTON—Hartington Public stunned Laurel-Concord in opening round action in the C 2-6 sub-districts by the score of 34-41. The Lady Cats then fell to top-seed Ponca in the title game by the score of 75-36.

HARTINGTON—Wynot hung with Newcastle early but succumbed to the undefeated Lady Raiders’ pressure in the second half in Sub District girls’ basketball action. Newcastle ended the 57-30 contest as Sub District champs.

OMAHA — The Cedar County News was one of only two Nebraska media outlets honored here Thursday by the Nebraska Dairy Council.

The Cedar County News and KETV Channel 7, Omaha picked up the Dairy Council’s communications award. The group hands out a select number of awards each year.
