RANDOLPH – The winter’s fourth major storm, a raging blizzard that brought four to five inches of snow whipped along by a lashing wind of nearly 40 miles an hour velocity, swept over the Randolph community and all northeast Nebraska Thursday afternoon, continuing until late Friday. The terrific winds abated Friday afternoon but at that time the mercury began to plunge downward and reached an unofficial low of -16 in Randolph Saturday morning.

This blizzard was the worst since the November 18 and 19 blizzard, but it was not as bad in this community as that storm, as the snowfall was about one-third and the wind didn’t blow as long. The first blizzard began also on a Thursday afternoon and continued all that night, all day Friday and did not abate until Saturday morning, but the wind this time was slightly over 24 hours duration.

With the situation already serious in this community, the last blizzard further complicated relief efforts.

All country roads, and all primary and secondary highways were left blocked, as the added snow made the already almost unbelievably high drifts even higher, and made the snow blanket on the level even deeper.

The drifts left by the blizzard were very hard packed and the snow fairly wet, making the task of digging out difficult.

RANDOLPH – Roger Broer is one of the artists featured in the January-February issue of “The First Voices” a publication issued by Nebraskaland magazine.

Three of Broer’s paintings are pictured on two pages of the magazine depicting various scenes. One paragraph taken from the article concerning Broer says: Finally, sharing the distinction of the youngest of the six artists with Daniel Long Soldier, is Roger Broer. Broer’s work has a distinctly professional quality - in some respects reminding one of the symbolization of Bert Seabroun. His work is at once thoroughly modern and distinctly traditional in subject matter. His use of colors is vivid and profound, and by leaving evidence of the drawing stage in his completed painting, we are always reminded of the process of the work, the way in which it came into being. Broer also uses, at times, lined paper, which links his work deliberately to the ledger drawings of the 19th century.”

Roger is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louie Broer of Randolph and is a graduate of Randolph High School.
