1965: Area 4H members work to rebuild State 4H Camp

HARTINGTON — Hartington’s summer recreation program at Felber Park is proving very popular with the youngsters.
There have been very large turnouts the first two days.
Miss Therese Rossiter, director, reported that 73 registered Tuesday, the opening day. Eighty-seven children were on hand Wednesday.
The children are taking part in games and doing handcraft work. Special events will be held during the summer. The program is sponsored by the Hartington Chamber of Commerce.

HARTINGTON — Nebraska 4-H members and friends of 4-H are mixing imagination, dedication and just plain hard work in their efforts to raise funds to rebuild and complete the State 4-H Camp which was damaged by fire May 5.
“This ‘recipe’ is a successful one, although a long pull still lies ahead to put the $50,000 fund drive over the top,” according to W.M. Antes, State 4-H leader at the University of Nebraska.
Since June 15, contributions from organizations and individuals ranging from $1-$500 have totalled $1,280, Antes said.
Cedar county 4-H clubs have raised $100 to date to help the fund-raising project.

COLERIDGE– Coleridge started off its Fourth of July celebration with an Old Settler’s picnic at noon in the park. There were 200 registered for this event which also honored Dr. F. G. Dewey for 55 years of service to the community. A cake was baked and decorated in his honor by Mrs. Jake Meier and a purse of silver presented to him by members of the community. Mrs. Seth Anderson, chairman of the 4 C’s, read a poem about him and congratulated him. Mayor Bob Yost also gave a talk in his honor. Dr. Dewey responded with a brief talk.
Prizes were awarded to the oldest person present, Dr. Dewey; to the couple longest married, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Dennis, 52 1/2 years; longest married couple from out of state, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Jordan of Bellflower, Calif.; longest married couple out of town but in Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Wait of Hartington: person from the greatest distance, Karen Pielsticker, of Bielifeld, Germany, and Sgt. and Mrs. John Heitman, of Hawaii; also honored for coming a long distance were Marvin Pedersen of Arlington, S. D., Wilbur Dirks of Bellevue, Wash., Howard Munter, of Rome, N. Y., and Allan and Kim Jordan of Ballwin, Mo.
Ruth Wallace was honored for being the teacher present who had been gone from Coleridge the longest time.
Booths displayed 4 C’s projects and “Know Nebraska Better.” All stands and Concessions were operated by local persons.
A kiddie parade was held with 18 entrees. Prizes for these entries were won by: Gary, Byron and Denise Hansen, “The Grand Old Flag,” first place; Lans Rothfusz, Michael Hansen and Charlotte Tracy, “The Star Spangled Banner” second place; Richard Kalin placed third with his “Cruising Down the River.”
An evening program, “Show Boat,” concluded the day’s events with over 1,800 persons attending. Mrs. Seth Andersen and Ed Brockman were emcees. Musical skits, square dance music, mouth harp selections, solos, accordion playing, and acrobatic acts made up the program which was climaxed by audience participation in singing, “Dear Hearts and Gentle People.”
The crowd also enjoyed a large display of fireworks.

HARTINGTON– Carla Peitz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Peitz of Hartington, received first prize in a poetry contest of the Group Division II, in the Nebraska State Court of Catholic Daughters.
Miss Peitz was awarded five dollars by Kay Dubas, of Grand Island, State Treasurer of the C. D. of A.
Last spring Carla received first in Div. II from the Hartington Court and was awarded $2.50 making her eligible for the State Contest.
