1963: Hartington swimming pool sees record numbers

HARTINGTON — A heifer belonging to John Schmidt was killed early Monday after being struck by a car two and a half miles south of Hartington. The front of the car, belonging to Earl Noecker, Hartington, was badly damaged. Noecker walked away with just bruises.

HARTINGTON — Thomas Luken, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Luken, has been promoted in the United States Fisheries service and is attending a departmental management training school in Washington D.C. from Sept. 2 to April 10.

HARTINGTON — Robert Beig left for Maywood, Calif. on Sunday evening after receiving word that his father, Emil, was ill. He will be gone about a week.

HARTINGTON — The Hartington swimming pool attendance number was beaten this year by more than 3,000.
A total of 21,101 people were recorded. One hundred twenty-two family season tickets and 116 individual tickets were sold.

HARTINGTON — The Dryland Daisies Club met Tuesday evening in the home of Mrs. Gene Milander. Mrs. William Leapley presented the lesson, “County Government.”

HARTINGTON — The Ladies Cemetery Club met Thursday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Howard McClain. A reading on teachers was given by Mrs. Donnie Winkelbaur. Lunch was then served.

HARTINGTON — A farewell party was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Arens recently for Kenneth Potts, who is returning to the seminary, and for Lloyd Sudbeck, who is going back into the service. The evening was spent playing cards, then, dinner was served.

HARTINGTON — Bill Winkelman and Tom Wattier, who recently completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri left Thursday for Fort Belvoir in Virginia where they will attend a construction school.

HARTINGTON — Dr. A. M. Wurtz, formerly of Hartington, entered the hospital to have his right leg amputated above the knee on Aug. 19.

HARTINGTON — Mrs. Alice Frigge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Frigge, Hartington, received a $50 award for coming in second place at the National Catholic Daughters of America Poetry Contest.

HARTINGTON — Robert Havekost has been appointed to be a member of the Farmers House Administration County Committee, according to Thomas Lambert, the agency’s county supervisor.
