HARTINGTON — Members of Cedar County’s 4-H soil judging team turned in very good performances at the state contest in West Point Tuesday.

Gary Lentz of Coleridge placed third in the 4-H individual division. The county team composed of Gary and John and Mary Fleming and Merle Arens Hartington took third in the team competition. Mary Jo tied for tenth in the individual judging.

Cedar County Extension Agent Robert Weir praised the efforts of the four youths in the contest. First place in the 4-H division went to a Lancaster county team that had three college boys on it, Mr. Weir said. A Lincoln County team was second. The Cedar County team was third in the district contest held earlier in the month. Gary, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lentz of Coleridge, is a member of the Coleridge Livestock 4-H club. John and Mary Jo, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Fleming III; and Merle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arens, are all members of West Star Soil conservation 4-H club.

Mary Jo was the only girl entered in the competition, Weir said. She was also most popular contestant at the event, the extension agent added.

The main thing in the contest is judging what the land is and how it should be farmed, Mr. Weir said. Contestants must decide what kind of land there is and the classification of land based on use in farming. The youths must know the various conservation measures to use. Mr. Fleming accompanied Mr. Weir and the youths to West Point.
