1959: Cub Scouts honor Becker for his bravery

HARTINGTON — Harold Martindale was elected as the head of the Masonic Lodge in Hartington.

Dec. 9, 1959

Hartington—Tommy Becker, Hartington Cub Scout, earned the certificate of merit for saving his brother, Steve, from burning. Don Marek of Norfolk chairman of the district scout advancement committee presented the certificate.

HARTINGTON — Two county newspapers have new owners. Vance Vierguetz bought the Randolph Times from Stanley Norris and Bob Yost bought the Coleridge Blade from Vierguetz.

HARTINGTON — C.J. Dendinger retired from his position with the government postal service after 23 years of service, Ernest Petsche is serving as a temporary carrier.

HARTINGTON — Mr. and Mrs. Francis Schulte left this morning (Thursday) on a chartered plane from Omaha for a five-day all-expense holiday vacation at Miami Beach, Fla., as guests of the J.I. Case Implement Co. Schulte Buick and Implement of Hartington was one of the winners of the trip from Nebraska in a sales quota contest sponsored by the Case Company. The Schultes will arrive in Miami this evening and will be guests with other winner at the Americana hotel on the Gold Coast at Bal Harbour. They will leave Miami on the return trip on Monday evening.

HARTINGTON — Pfc. Willard Yates of Fort Benning, Ga., arrived here Sunday evening to spend the holidays in the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Peitz.

Pfc. Yates will return to Georgia when he reports to duty.
