1959: Consumers’ warehouse goes up in flames

COLERIDGE—Five Cedar County youth left Monday morning for Omaha where they will be inducted into the armed service. All volunteered for the draft. They are Claude A. D. Mathiason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Mathiason, and Larry G. Pool, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Pool, both of Hartington, Kenneth and Gene Brodersen, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert J. Brodersen, and Darrell F. Jorgensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans P. Jorgensen, all of Coleridge.

HARTINGTON — Miss Barbara Fuelberth, James Weir and David Levorson have been selected from Hartington High School to attend the Nebraska State Music Clinic in Lincoln Nov. 19-21. The students, all seniors, will be accompanied by Miss Maxine Stone, school music instructor and band director. Miss Fuelberth will be a member of the All-State chorus. Levorson, who plays a baritone horn, will be a member of the allsate band.
The event is being held in connection with the Nebraska Music Educator’s convention. It will include rehearsals and participation in the clinic.
The clinic will be climaxed Saturday evening with performances by the all-state band, orchestra and chorus.

HARTINGTON — Fire of unknown origin destroyed the old Consumers Public Power Company’s warehouse here early Sunday morning. The fire was out of control when the Hartington Fire Department arrived. The warehouse was closed and had not been used for some time. The fire started in the south end of the structure and burned the walls.
The metal roof also caved in. The origin of the fire is still not known at this time. There was no wiring in the building, so it was not electrical. It was thought that birds with nests in the building might have carried some combustible material in.
The fire started about 12:30 a.m.

HARTINGTON — Jerry Speery, Hartington, escaped injury when his car went out of control on an icy stretch of highway about eight miles south of Yankton and upset, Sheriff John Riibe reported.
The accident occurred about 6 p.m., Sunday. The sheriff said Sperry’s auto hit some ice, went out of control, into a ditch and rolled over on its top.
Nov. 26, 1959
HARTINGTON — Fifteen Hartington Boy Scouts and three leaders took part in the Covered Wagon Council 1959 Exposition in Omaha Friday and Saturday. The Hartington troop won a blue ribbon on their nature booth. Over 200 scout troops had demonstration booths set up in the Omaha civic auditorium.
The Hartington troop booth featured a nature display. The highlight of the display was a small, but active volcano and a bird identification board. When a bird was properly identified the board would light up.
The boys who attended were Bob Goeden, Larry Kalin, Gary Olson, Neil Miller, Gary Dooley, Gary Wilkens, Alan Folkers, Jim Miller, Ken Miller, Bill O’Meara, Dave Adams, Roger Miller, Bob Folkers, Dave Huss and Walt Hively.
