1958: Courthouse hosts 10th annual County Government Day

HARTINGTON — No farm program will work successfully unless the support price is a minimum of 90% parity, Carl Wilken, economic analyst of Washington, D.C., told a group of farmers and businessmen here last Thursday night.

Speaking before a crowd of about 70 people in the Holy Trinity parish center auditorium, Wilken declared “the time has come when you must wake up and realize that if you want your share of American prosperity, you must elect someone who is willing to demand that you receive 100% of parity, which in terms of dollars means you will receive $1 with which to buy $1 worth of goods produced by others.”

HARTINGTON —As the number of juvenile delinquents increases in the state, many Nebraskans are asking, “Should we create a separate system of juvenile courts to deal with the problem?”

The voters will have an opportunity to provide an answer at the Nov. 4 general election.

HARTINGTON —The annual Cornhusker Boys’ and Girls’ County Government Day, a big event for the junior students in the county’s high schools, will be held in Hartington Nov. 3.

The 10th annual Government Day, sponsored by the American Legion and Auxiliary, will take place at the courthouse where students will observe and participate in the functions of government. Every high school in the county is asked to have a representative elected for each of the county offices.

Only juniors are qualified to participate in the program. However, schools having more juniors than the number elected to county offices will be able to bring the additional youths.

These will be classified as alternates and attend a special program during the participation period in the afternoon.

CONCORD—A demonstration on building new, low cost concrete farm structures will be held at the farm near Concord, Oct. 30, construction men and others interested are invited to attend. E. A. Olson, extension engineer from the University of Nebraska college of agriculture, will conduct the “tilt-up” farm building demonstration.

HARTINGTON —Miss Mary Ann Zavadil, senior at Mount St. Scholastica college, Atchison, Kan., was chairman in charge of campus arrangements for the fall workshop of the Kansas State Home Economics Clubs. Seventeen colleges and universities participated.

Miss Zavadil is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Zavadil of Fordyce.

HARTINGTON — Grain sorghum yield in the county will probably be higher than last year, County Extenion Agent Robert Weir commented. However, he did not think there was as much sorghum planted as a year ago. Yields reported on two farms will make about 100 bushels to an acre and several have noted 75 and 80 bushels. Some farmers have completed harvesting the sorghum.

HARTINGTON — Plans are underway for the Hartington Chamber of Commerce Halloween party Oct. 31. The annual event is organized for the youngsters and teens of the Hartington community. There will be a movie for the younger children at 7 in the Lyric theatre. A dance for the teens will be held in the city auditorium later in the evening. A Halloween king and queen will be crowned at the dance.

HARTINGTON — The Republican Caravan, featuring state and national GOP candidates, will visit Hartington Wednesday, Oct. 17, 1963

COLERIDGE — A corn picking bee was held at the home of Chris Meier last Wednesday evening. The crew of seven picked about 80 acres of corn.
