1945: Uhing earns praise from General Kenney

Aug. 9, 1945

HARTINGTON — Mr. and Mrs. Herman Uhing of Hartington have received letter from General George C. Kenney, U.S. Army commander commanding their son, Technical Fifth Grade Edmund H. Uhing for his skill and outstanding devotion to duty. Tech. Uhing has been in the army air force for three years.

”I feel sure that you will share my pride in his achievements and in the excellent record he has established as an integral member of an air force combat team during more than two years of sustained operations in the Southwest Pacific,” General Kenney wrote.

“Tech Uhing’s particular job has been that of foreman of a construction crew of one of our engineer companies. During his overseas service the consistently high quality of his work has won for him the respect and admiration of his officers and fellow soldiers. His fine record is a credit to himself and to his organization. Tech Uhing has done his job and done it well. No commander could ask more. He has been a real contribution to victory. I am proud of him and proud to have him under my command.”

HARTINGTON — Three more Cedar County soldiers have filed discharge papers in the office of the county clerk.

Those completing their discharge records were:

Pvt. Verle Olmstead of Laurel. He entered the army in October, 1939, and was stationed at Fort Kamehamea, T.H., during the Japanese attack on the Island of Oahu Dec. 7, 1941. He also participated in the Saipan and Tinian campaigns. He is entitled to wear the American Defense Service Medal, 2 Bronze Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon. Pfc.

Palmer G. Root of Belden. He joined the army in June, 1943 and went overseas to Europe in October, 1944. He wears the European-Afrcan-Middle East Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Technician Third Grade Mark A. Hochstein of Fordyce. He entered the service in April, 1942, and went overseas in September of the same year. He participated in the Tunisia, Naples, Foffia, Rome, Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley campaigns. He has the Good Conduct Medal.

Aug. 9, 1945

HARTINGTON — Pfc. Theodore L. Sudbeck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Sudbeck of Fordyce, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for “meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in Leyte and Mindanao, Philippine Islands, during the period from Oct. 21, 1944 to June 30, 1945.”

The citation given Pfc. Sudbeck read in part as follows:

“Pfc. Sudbeck, in the performance of his duties as squad leader of a heavy machine gun position, rendered outstanding service to the corps headquarters by his superior devotion to duty and acceptance and discharge of responsibilities far beyond that normally expected from one in his position.

“During these operations, Pfc. Sudbeck worked long and arduous hours under adverse weather conditions setting up his position, and acting as guard both day and night. Pfc. Sudbeck spent most of his offduty hours in the instructing and training of his men in the care, preservation and functioning of their weapon. His willingness, leadership and technical proficiency aided materially in the defense of this headquarters.”

HARTINGTON — Sgt. Charles Schirmer, former Hartington youth, has been discharged from the army after seeing service in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany. He visited here this week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schirmer of York.

HARTINGTON — Eighteen more Cedar County men, mostly young men, have been ordered by selective service to report Aug. 20 for pre-induction physical exams for the armed services.

Those ordered to report are:

Hartington: Buile E. Dominn, Merlin A. Keifer, Gerald F. Hish, Dean W. Griess, Howard G. Elliot, Gerald E. Miller, Clifford R. McMann.

Laurel: Charles C. Mitties, Darrell G. Johnson, Milo G. Johnson.

Coleridge: Laurence R.Reilley, Gerald F. Ruger.

Crofton: Harold M. Kuehler, Noel R. Kollars.
