1945: Some area soldiers are discharged, others are re-assigned

Aug. 30, 1945

HARTINGTON — Lt. Dwain W. Lentz of Hartington, who has been stationed at Westover Field, Mass., was sent last week to the Fort Devens, Mass., Separation Center to be discharged from the army under the point system. An overseas veteran pilot, Lt. Lentz had a point total in excess of the number needed for discharge.

Aug. 30, 1945

HARTINGTON — Seaman 2/c Dwight L. Rankin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Rankin, has returned to Camp Endicott, Davisville, R.I. after spending a 12-day furlough with his parents and brother, Pfc. Duane L. Rankin.

Pfc. Rankin who arrived home from overseas last month, has gone to F. Leavenworth,, Kan.

Aug. 30, 1945

BELDEN — Pfc. Gordon Casal, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Casal, arrived Wednesday at Boston from Italy.

His cousin, Dewey Bredemeyer, son of Henry Bredemeyer of Hartington, was on that exact same ship but the pair did not know it, and did not meet until the last day out.

ST. HELENA — Petty Officer Gilbert Kaiser, son of Mrs. Teresa Kaiser, arrived Sunday on a 30-day leave. He has served with the navy for over four years and has spent many months in the Pacific.

BELDEN — Staff Sgt. and Mrs. Gerald Leapley have gone to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he expects to be stationed. Sgt. Leapley has been at the Marana Air Base, Tucson, Ariz., since September, 1942.

BELDEN — Louis Abts, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Abts, and Charles Feldhacker, son of Mrs. Jake Feldhacker, left Monday fo Omaha where they joined the Marines.

LAUREL — Marine Pfc. Wayne Danielson, son of Dannie Danielson, arrived Sunday from Okinawa, following three years in the Pacific war theatre, and four years of service. His mother met him in Sioux City.

FORDYCE — Gerald Buschelman P.M. 2/c left Monday for Seattle where he is stationed at a hospital.

He spent the past 30 days at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Buschelman. Miss Rita Noecker accompanied him to Washington where she will visit with her father, Frank Noecker.

LAUREL — Cpl. Donald Olmstead, son of Mrs. Belle Olmstead, who has been in the European area the past two years, has arrived in the U.S. and expects to be home soon. Mrs. Olmstead has not seen Donald for eight years. His wife and three children live in Fremont.
