1945: Reifert meets up with old high school friend on Okinawa

HARTINGTON — Richard J. Hesse graduated this week from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

Hesse, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hesse, living northeast of Hartington, finished in the upper 15 percent of his class and was commissioned an officer in the Army Engineer Corps.

HARTINGTON — Cpt. Eugene McFadden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles McFadden of Hartington, recently sent his parents a group of pictures showing his camp in the Aleutians, and a copy of the camp’s mimeographed newspaper, The Aleut.”

The pictures showed snow covered mountains and some of the soldier’s huts almost buried by snow.

Cpl. McFadden has been in the Aleutians for almost two years.

June 7, 1945

HARTINGTON — Sgt. Gerhard Reiken, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theo Reiken of Wynot, has been discharged from the army after spending 37 months overseas.

He arrived in the United States May 10 from the Pacific area and has now returned to his home here.

A veteran of the New Guinea and Philippines campaigns, Sgt. Reiken was in four major engagements.

He received four Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Ribbon.

HARTINGTON — Pfc. James Reifert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Reifert, recently met Jim Furey on Okinawa. Furey is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Furey of Walthill, former Hartington residents. Reifert and Furey were classmates in school here. Furey is the former Editor of the Cedar County News and the brother of former News Publisher J.P. O’Furey. June 7, 1945

HARTINGTON — Lt. Warren Stage, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Stage, who was stationed at Fort Ord in California, has shipped out for overseas duties.

HARTINGTON — MM 2/c Elwin Jordan, who had been stationed at San Pedro, Calif., left May 26 for overseas duties. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Jordan.

COLERIDGE — Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dirks and Mrs. Ed Lorang went to Sioux City to meet their son and brother, Wilber Dirks, who is home from overseas.

He has been in the army over three years.

HARTINGTON — Pfc. Louis Pinkelman left Saturday for Los Angeles, Calif., after spending a 21-day furlough back home with his wife and other relatives.
