1943: Hartington area man to be ordained in September

Sept. 9, 1943

HARTINGTON — Sgt. Albert Stevens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stevens, Hartington, received the Good Conduct Medal.

He is in the United States Army and currently stationed in Camp Stoneman in California.

HARTINGTON — Pfc. Edward Keifer was recently promoted to corporal. He has been in action in the South Pacific and is presently serving in Australia.

HARTINGTON — A fire early Monday morning caused considerable damage to the home of Ralph Hinrichs.

HARTINGTON — Rev. Norbert Boland, who is the first young man from Holy Trinity Church, Hartington, to enter the seminary, will be ordained September 22.

HARTINGTON — The 4-H Club girls won major honor awards at the Cedar County Fair’s annual baby beef show. Dorothy Haahr, Hartington, was grand champion in the steer division. Phyllis Glover, Coleridge, was grand champion in the heifer division.

HARTINGTON — A total of 577 students are registered this year in the two schools in town, Hartington Public and the Catholic school.

Sept. 10, 1953

HARTINGTON — Hank’s Bar, Fordyce, was broken into and the culprits stole $65 from the cash register.

They attempted to also steal 24 cases of whiskey and 25 cartons of cigarettes but were apparently frightened away from the establishment before they could load them into their vehicle.

HARTINGTON — This year enrollment at Hartington Public schools is 300 students and at the Holy Trinity schools it is 334.

HARTINGTON — The football season will begin in this area Friday night. Tyndall will come to town to take on Holy Trinity.

The Wildcats will travel to Laurel for their first game of the 1953 high school football season.
