1906: Area man dies when run-away horses toss him from wagon

COLERIDGE - At about 6 p.m. Sunday evening Miss Louise M. Delaney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delos Delaney, took a dose of strychnine and before medical assistance could arrive died at her parents’ home five miles southeast of Coleridge.

Coroner Reifert of Hartington was called but after hearing the testimony of a few witnesses concluded that an inquest was unnecessary as it was clear that the deceased came to her death by her own hand with suicidal intent.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Delaney testified the girl told them that she had taken strychnine from a bottle that had been in the house for about a year and that she had never expressed a desire to die but had been sick since Christmas and had sometimes acted rather strange.

Dr. Ingham of Coleridge testified that the girl had been dead some 15 to 20 minutes before he arrived and that suicide had been caused by Melancholia brought on by ill health. The remains were interred in the Norris Cemetery east of Coleridge.

The two had just started out to go to the W. A. Grant sale a mile west of Coleridge when the team became frightened and ran away throwing both from the wagon and before medical aid could arrive Mr. Preston had passed away.

The family has resided in this area but a few years, but have gained many friends both in Coleridge and Hartington and in their neighborhood.
