Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1948, was Election Day. In the presidential race, Thomas E. Dewey, the Republican challenger, was heavily favored to defeat the Democratic incumbent, Harry S. Truman. The Chicago Tribune of November 3, prematurely carried a banner headline reading “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN.” The error was caused by the editors’ desire to scoop the competition by getting the story out in the early edition. Fake news is nothing new.
