Field pea plot tour set at Haskell Ag Lab

CONCORD — Area producers interested in adding field peas to their crop rotation will have a chance to see variety trials and agronomic research up close during a June 23 plot tour at the Haskell Ag Lab near Concord.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln field pea plot tour will begin at 10 a.m. at the research farm near the Haskell Ag Lab, part of the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center.

The tour will include spring pea variety trials and agronomic studies looking at seed rates for different planting populations, zinc seedtreatment and the impact of genetics on cadmium accumulation in seeds.

The variety trial includes 19 pea varieties from five seed companies: Progene Plant Research, Puris, Valesco Genetics, Meridian Seeds and Great Northern Ag.

The tour is designed to give farmers, agronomists and industry partners a chance to walk the plots, ask questions and discuss the opportunities and challenges tied to expanding field pea production in northeast Nebraska.

Speakers will include Dipak Santra, UNL alternative crops breeding specialist; Michael Kurtzhaals, UNL research technologist; Chris Werth and Bhavesh Reddy Mudupa, of Puris Grains; and Brian Dawson, of Ingredion Incorporated.

There will be no formal presentations. Attendees are encouraged to share their own experiences and observations.

The day will begin with sign-up, donuts, beverages and coffee at 10 a.m. The group will travel to the plot site at 10:15 a.m.
