1926: Robbers break into Sholes pool hall

June 3, 1926

RANDOLPH - Roland Vinckel has been elected to the position of assistant cashier of the Farmers & Merchants State bank of this city and will enter upon his new duties in a few days. For the past six years Mr. Vinckel has been superintendent of the schools at Lyons, and is a young man of thorough reliability, who we believe will make as good in his new work as he has in that he is leaving.

RANDOLPH - Clark & Hill were highly pleased by the response made to the announcement of their opening day last Saturday. Their new filling station was thronged with customers all the afternoon and until late at night, and each customer received a half pound box of delicious chocolates, and if he were a smoker, a cigar went in for good measure. Four hundred boxes of chocolates were on hand for the opening day but failed to come on time.

Messrs. Clark and Hill expressed themselves as greatly appreciating the manner in which the public greeted their formal opening. The day was a complete success.

RANDOLPH - In the tennis tournament of the State Teachers college at Wayne, Bilse Robinson of this city and his partner McMurphy won the doubles. In the singles McMurphy was first and Robinson was second. These two were the outstanding players among the college men. Ada Schenk and Dorothy Lee were winners in the girls’ section in both doubles and singles.

SHOLES - The pool hall was entered last week Sunday sometime during the night and the marauders carried away a slot machine owned by Norfolk parties which contained money, the exact amount being unknown. Some cigarettes and tobacco were also taken. The money had been taken from the till by the proprietor and was thus saved from the raiders.

At this time the slot device has not been found. It is thought that the machine was thrown away or hidden after the money was taken out. Local talent is credited with the job.

Some time ago, we are told, the pool hall proprietor stepped over to the blacksmith shop for a few minutes and during his absence a five dollar bill disappeared from the money drawer. Since then no money has been left in the till over night.

RANDOLPH - Last Saturday all afternoon and evening two steers fed by Walter Hanssen and Ed Joslyn of the Randolph baby beef club were on exhibit in front of the Ovesen & Sherwood market. Much interest was taken in the exhibits and the figures printed on large signs.

Both calves were on feed for 132 days. The figures as submitted from the baby beef club record by R. E. Weir were as follows: Walter Hanssen’s calf—Wt. Jan. 17, 435 lbs., wt. May 29, 765 lbs. Total gain 330 lbs., average daily gain 2.5 lbs.

Ed Joslyn’s calf—Wt. Jan. 17, 600 lbs., wt. May 29, 890 lbs. Total gain 290 lbs., average daily gain 2.2 lbs.

Ovesen & Sherwood purchased these steers from the boys at a good price. These two are the only members of the club that will not complete the full project.
