Hartington rainfall sees slight rebounds after dry start to 2026

HARTINGTON — Hartington’s two wettest months of the year so far have come back-to-back.

After recording just 0.60 inch of precipitation from January through March, the area saw a sharp turnaround in April and May. April brought 3.24 inches of precipitation, followed by 3.96 inches in May.

Together, those two months accounted for 7.20 inches, or about 92 percent of Hartington’s 7.80 inches of precipitation recorded through the end of May.

The recent moisture helped offset what had been a notably dry start to the year. Hartington’s normal precipitation for January through March is 2.91 inches, based on 1991–2020 monthly averages, but this year’s total for that period was only about one-fifth of normal.

April finished almost exactly on pace with its monthly average of 3.21 inches, while May came in slightly below its average of 4.37 inches.

Even with the wetter spring finish, Hartington remained below normal for the year to date. The January-through-May average is 10.49 inches, compared with 7.80 inches recorded so far in 2026.
