HARTINGTON — Hartington Baseball is stepping up to the plate with a unique fundraiser that allows community members to help the program at no cost to themselves.
The organization is currently collecting new and gently used shoes as part of a fundraising effort that benefits both the baseball program and individuals in developing countries. Donated shoes will be distributed to those in need, while the baseball program receives funding based on the number of shoes collected.
Community members are encouraged to clean out closets and donate wearable shoes of all types and sizes.
Collection boxes have been placed at several locations throughout Hartington, including Bank of Hartington, Security Bank, Farmers & Merchants State Bank, and all three Cedar Security Bank locations. Donations can also be dropped off directly at the baseball field during games.
Organizers say participation has been encouraging so far, but the program has only reached about 25 percent of its overall goal.
“We’re hoping people will continue spreading the word,” organizers said. “If you have friends or family outside of Hartington who may have extra shoes to donate, we’d love for them to participate as well.”
The fundraiser offers an easy opportunity for residents to support local youth athletics while also helping provide footwear to those in need around the world.
