1996: Randolph golfers earn trip to State tournament

May 22, 1996

RANDOLPH - Clint Alderson was among the class of 1996 graduating Sunday, May 19 from Doane College at Crete. He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

He was the recipient of several special awards given throughout the weekend’s festivities. These honors include: The Student Congress Award, The Bert Kinapp Trophy and he was one of two students in the class to receive the Alumni Senior Award.

Attending the graduation were his family, Larry, Linda and Katie Alderson of Belden, Amy and Reggie Arduser of Lincoln, Don Winkelbauer of Carroll, Robert Alderson of Randolph, Vickie Alderson, Bryan and Danielle of Neligh, Loren Winkelbauer of Hastings, Pam Winkelbauer of Omaha and Be and Terry Magdanz of Lincoln. A luncheon was held for family and friends at the Terry Magdanz residence in Lincoln.

RANDOLPH - Jason Wiese received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Midland Lutheran College on Sunday, May 19. Jason graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Secondary Education in Social Science and Coaching. Attending the graduation at the Hopkins arena at the college were his parents, Jerry and Debbie Wiese and Justin of Randolph, his wife, Sarah and son, Michael and her parents, Mitchell and Ellen Egeberg of Seward. A reception was held at his home following the graduation.

RANDOLPH - The Randolph golf team qualified for the State Tournament in Lincoln on Monday and Tuesday, May 20 and 21, earning second place in the 16 team race at Plainview’s District C2 Tournament.

The State meet was at Lincoln Pioneers Golf Course. The team consisted of five seniors who were on the team for three years since the golf program began in Randolph. The team is coached by Russ Jensen.

Individual scores were Matt Dowling, 46, 37, 83 (7th place); Luke Stueckrath, 45, 40, 85 (10th place); Jeff Carstens, 43, 43, 86; Mike Jensen, 43, 47, 90; and Jim Burbach, 51, 42, 93.

Team scores were: Creighton, 331; Randolph, 344; Orchard, 348; Plainview, 353; Oakland-Craig, 359; Coleridge, 364.

RANDOLPH -Three Randolph Lady Cardinals participated in four individual events and brought home one silver medal for seven team points in the Class C State Track Meet at Burke High School in Omaha on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18.

Saturday afternoon, Mandy Poppe jumped 5’4” in the Class C high jump competition to tie for second place with senior Tina Masek from Wahoo Neumann. Sophomore Diana Lavington from Gibbon won the gold with a 5’4” jump.

First, second and third places were determined by the attempts made on previous jumps. Twentythree contestants participated in the Class C high jump.

Tara Kumm took fourth place in her 100 meter high hurdles heat, and fourth place in the second heat of the 300 meter low hurdles preliminaries with a time of 49.6 seconds but missed qualifying for the finals in either event.

Carmen Kollars, in the 400 meter dash preliminaries, ran for fourth place in the second heat in one minute and 2.25 seconds but fell short of the eighth place qualifying time of 1:01.73 by .52 second.

Coach Jim Troshynski said he was proud of the girls’ accomplishments this year. He said, “the girls were small in numbers, but they accumulated large numbers of points in the meets.”
