1946: Adams earns gold at State Track meet

May 21, 1936

RANDOLPH - J.N. Byergo was elected president of the Lions Club.

Others elected were J. M. Liewer and G. O. Deines, vice presidents; R. L. Buchanan, Lion teamer; Dan Davey, tail twister; Glen Starkey, secretary and treasurer; Joseph Rogers and Harold Sherwood, directors.

RANDOLPH - Borst and Huwaldt, operators of the Farmers Produce station have converted their Chevrolet truck into a refrigerated unit. They make regular trips to Chicago with egg shipments.

RANDOLPH -Application for a star mail route from Yankton to Norfolk was rejected in Washington.

The route had been endorsed by community clubs in northeast Nebraska.

RANDOLPH - Northeast Nebraska is coming in for a share of highway improvement in bids called for June 4 on an estimated cost of $370,000.

The surfacing of No. 20 between Randolph and Plainview and work on No. 81 and No. 15 give Cedar and Pierce counties a good deal of needed highway improvement.

RANDOLPH - Eldred Cleveland, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Cleveland is the winner of the Regents’ scholarship to the University of Nebraska.

James Callaway, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Callaway is the alternate to the Regents’ scholarship. Both boys are honor graduates of 1946.

May 23, 1946

RANDOLPH - Dale Adams, making the last appearance of his career at Randolph, tossed the discus 135-6.5 at the state track meet in Lincoln to win the Class C discus event.

Clarence Schutt was also a participant in the discus but didn’t place.

RANDOLPH -Cedar Countians inducted into service recently include Gordon F. Backer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Backer, a senior at RHS who will be graduated this spring in absentia and Ralph Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brown, was inducted into army service at Ft. Snelling, Minn.

Also accepted for service were Earl Fish and Laddie Arduser of Belden.

S/Sgt. Earl Bethune was discharged May 14 at the Ft. Douglas, Utah separation center and arrived home on Thursday. He was in service two years, overseas over a year with the 103rd Infantry Regiment.
