Cardinal tracksters wrap up season at District meet

HARTINGTON — The Randolph Lady Cardinals will send two athletes to Omaha after strong performances at the Class D-3 District Track and Field Championships May 13.

Randolph finished fifth in the nine-team girls standings with 34 points. Archangels Catholic claimed the district title with

122.5 points, followed by Howells-Dodge with 105 and Wausa Public Schools with

100.

Emily Gilliland continued her strong postseason run by qualifying for the state meet in two events.

Gilliland punched her ticket to Omaha with a second-place finish in the

400-meter dash, clocking a time of 1:01.11. Wausa’s Reagan Gillilan won the event in

58.07 seconds.

Gilliland also qualified in the 800-meter run after placing second in 2:31.34.

Abbey Backer earned a state berth in the triple jump, placing third with a leap of

33 feet, 5 inches.

Backer also turned in a strong all-around district performance, finishing fifth in the long jump at 15-1.75 and fifth in the 100-meter dash in 13.41 seconds.

Backer teamed with Lilly Kuchta, Gilliland and Aniston Schmidt in the

4x100 relay, which placed fourth in

54.55.

The 4x400 relay team of Schmidt, Rylee Reimers, Bria Reimers and Gilliland finished fifth in 4:58.63.

Brooke Meier added a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.91.

Randolph scored four points in the boys division. Archangels Catholic won the boys team title with 118 points, while Howells-Dodge finished second with 104 and Wausa took third with 100.5.

Milo Rayford placed sixth in both the 200-meter dash in 24.99 seconds and the 400-meter dash in 55.41.

Luke Harder added a fifth-place finish in the high jump after clearing

5-11.

Stewart Umberger narrowly missed a medal in the shot put with a seventh-place finish, while the Randolph 4x100 relay team also placed seventh.

Classes C and D will compete at the state track and field meet in Omaha on May 22-23 following the Class A and B competition May 20-21.
