HARTINGTON — During the severe electrical storms last week, lightning struck twice in this vicinity with disastrous results.
At an early hour on Thursday morning, a bolt hit a large, old barn on the Nick Rolfes farm northwest of Fordyce, setting fire to it. The building was burned to the ground.
Two sets of harnesses, which were in the barn, were also consumed by the flames, but fortunately, the horses were out on pasture.
The loss was covered by insurance.
On Friday morning about 11 o’clock, another terrific bolt of lightning struck the Joe Marx residence near the County Jail and partially demolished it. The bolt descended on the southwest corner of the house with a blinding flash, knocked all the plaster off of the kitchen walls, burned a hole in the water pipes, melted the cables as it traveled over them and then buried itself in the ground on the southeast and northwest corners.
