1966: Voter turn-out light in non-presidential primary

May 12, 1966

HARTINGTON- Randolph and Cedar county voters generally followed the same trend as statewide voters in Tuesday’s primary election which created only slight interest.

Area voters strayed from the state-wide trend to give solid support to State Senator Jules Burbach in his losing bid for nomination for governor on the democratic ticket.

N. T. Tiemann, Wausa banker, received good backing in this vicinity as over the state to upset Val Peterson and get the nod as the republican’s candidate in the governor’s race. He will oppose Philip C. Sorensen who bested Burbach on the democratic ticket.

Gov. Frank Morrison easily outdistanced Raymond W. Arndt to set the stage for the Morrison-Curtis senatorial battle this fall.

County Clerk Ed Stevens said the vote was light as is usual in a non-presidential primary election. He expects the vote to be nearly the same as four years ago.

Below are results of voting in the top contests in the county. County vote is the first column; precinct 19-1, second column; and precinct 19-2, third column.

Governor (democratic): Sorensen .......... 177 13 4 Burbach .......... 932 32 7 Ley .......... 95 10 5 Governor (republican): Tiemann .......... 701 47 57 Peterson .......... 295 16 15 Kuhlman .......... 34 2 0 Hagemeister .......... 32 0 2 Hahn .......... 6 0 0

HARTINGTON- Otto Dendinger of Hartington evidently has to decide whether he is a republican or democrat after being nominated for the office of third district county commissioner in Cedar County on both Republican and Democratic tickets via a write-in campaign.

Last week Mr. Dendinger was appointed as commissioner of the district to fill the vacancy created by the recent death of John Bargstadt. Mr. Bargstadt had filed for re-election on the democratic ticket.

There was a three-way race in the write-in campaign with Mr. Dendinger getting the nod on both tickets. On the democratic ticket he received 274 votes, while Paul Modde received 121 and Harold Lorentzen 11. On the Republican ticket Dendinger got 62 votes, Lorentzen 60 and Modde 39.

County Clerk Ed Stevens said he would undoubtedly need legal counsel to clarify the situation.
