RHS Cardinals host track invite

RANDOLPH - The Randolph track teams practice every day on the home track on the southeast edge of town, so why not take advantage of some home cooking and have a great performance in front of the home fans as the 2026 track season winds down.

Ponca ran away with the boys’ and girls’ titles in the Randolph Invitational May 7, but the Cards and Lady Cards had a darned good showing as well.

Abbey Backer was the main cog in the Lady Card’s scoring, winning two individual events, placing second in another and helping win the 400-meter relay to have a hand in 38 points for the meet.

Backer won the long jump with a best of 15-09 and the triple jump hitting the sand after 33-03 for 20 points then placed second in the 100-meter dash to personally account for 28 points.

She ran the anchor leg in the relay which started with Lilly Kuchta who passed the baton to Emily Gilliland who handed off to Aniston Schmidt then to Backer who broke the tape in 54.50 seconds to claim the gold.

Gilliland had a fine day as well winning the 800-meters while Schmidt was third in the event.

Kuchta was third in the long jump, fifth in the triple jump and sixth in the 100 behind Backer.

Mabel Ngebeh was second in the discus and third in the shot while Jenna Guenther was fourth in the triple jump and Brooke Meier placed fourth in the 300 hurdles.

The Randolph 1,600-meter relay of Schmidt, Sydney Robinson, Guenther and Gilliland circled the track four times in 5:05.40 to take third in that event.

The Cardinals were led by three runner-up finishes.

Milo Rayford earned two silvers, one in the 200 with a 25.10 effort and one in the 400 in 56.20.

Luke Harder was second in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5-10.

Jaylen Junck placed in three events taking fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles and the triple jump and fifth in the 300 hurdles.

Stewart Umberger was fifth in the shot.

The Redbird 1,600-meter relay quartet of Ty Sievers, Rayford, Brecken Shearer and Junck placed fourth.

Both teams will run in the district meet on May 13 in Hartington.
