BATTLE CREEK - The Cedar Catholic track team traveled to Battle Creek for the Battle Creek Invitational May and came away with a runner-up trophy and a sixth-place showing.
Battle Creek won the boys’ division of the meet while Columbus Scotus took the girls’ title. “We competed well today,” said Cedar Catholic coach Blair Kalin. “We’re aiming towards districts so we don’t want to wear anyone out or aggravate a problem or injury. I thought we still ran hard in the events we were in.”
The middle distances, the throws, the relays and the jumps are where the Trojans gained some ground for their second-place finish.
Kighter Wortmann and Hunter Kuchta were their normal 1-2 punch in the 800 grabbing first and second.
Jared Rutar and Graham Potts finished 1-2 in the discus and 3-4 in the shot put. Easton Hochstein was second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump, Brady Hochstein was third in the long jump and Landon Rutar was fourth in the triple jump.
Blake Bensen and Micah Cattau each placed fifth, Bensen in the high jump and Cattau in the pole vault.
Nolan Heimes was third in both the hurdle races and Joseph Brown was third in the 1,600-meter run.
The Trojans were second in the 1,600 (Grady Haberer, Myles Baller, Landon Rutar, Brayden Fischer) sprint medley relay and the 1,600 (Mason Baller, Kuchta, Wortmann and Cooper Hochstein) relay.
The 400-meter squad of Booker Hochstein, Cooper Hochstein, Cattau and Mason Baller placed third.
The Lady Trojans were a bit short-handed but still managed to compete. The 1,600 sprint medley relay team of Mara Bernecker, Shayla Heine, Evie Freeman and Brynn Bernecker won the event and the 400-meter foursome of Freeman, Brynn Bernecker, Heine and Landry Heimes was fourth.
Calley Stewart was second in the triple jump and Madison Eickho was fourth in the 3,200-meter run.
Both teams are set for the district meet which will be held May 14 in Hartington.
