Wildcats complete busy week on the golf course

WAYNE - The Hartington-Newcastle golf team completed a busy week this past week as the 2026 golf season winds down.

The Wildcats played in the Battle Creek Invitational on May 7 ending up seventh after shooting a team total of 366 and placed fifth in the Greater Northeast Activities Conference earlier in the week carding a 362.

Kayne Gratzfeld brought home some hardware from Battle Creek after posting a 79 over 18 holes which placed him in the top 10 at eighth.

Norfolk Catholic’s Will Brockhaus shot the low round of the tournament with a 70, Memphis Ulrich of Cedar Catholic was second with a 73 and Calvin Wilmes of Creighton was third with a 75.

Carter Kelly was next for the ‘Cats with a 94, Lincoln Grutsch and Grady Lammers were 37th and 39th respectively with 96 and 97 while Austin Sudbeck brought home a 100.

The host Braves won the team title with a 312, Cedar Catholic was second at 314 and Norfolk Catholic was third at 316.

In the GNAC Tournament on May 5 in Atkinson, Hartington-Newcastle used the 362 for the fifth-place finish.

Gratzfeld and Kelly grabbed all conference designations with Gratzfeld finishing as the runner-up a 79, three strokes behind medalist Cole Lawless from Lutheran High Northeast.

Kelly placed 10th after firing an 86. “Overall we thought our kids competed very well in the conference tournament,” said HNS co-coach Mike Johnson. “Kayne had a really good day and finished as the individual runnerup for the second straight year in the conference tournament. Carter Kelly rebounded from a slow start and had a really good day.”

Lammers, Sudbeck and Grutsch shot 98, 99 and 100 respectively.

“For stretches we played some really good golf,” said Johnson. “Our biggest problem is that we have way too many ‘blow up’ holes. We need to do a better job of keeping those double bogeys to bogeys.”

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge won the team title by a single stroke over Lutheran High Northeast 342-343 to claim the Bears first GNAC golf title.

Cole Lawless was the individual champion for the Eagles with a 76.

The Wildcats headed to Randolph May 11 for an invitational then head to districts at Fairplay Golf Club in Norfolk on May 18.
