LINCOLN — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced the rebranding of the Omaha-based State Operations Center (SOC) to the Traffic Management Center (TMC), marking a shift to a more proactive approach in managing Nebraska’s transportation system.
The rebranding of the TMC reflects an expansion from primarily incident response, to actively managing congestion and optimizing traffic conditions.
The TMC will leverage intelligent transportation systems including cameras, sensors and dynamic message signs to monitor and influence traffic in real time.
This shift also strengthens statewide coordination, ensuring consistent operations across both rural and urban areas. Moving forward, the TMC will expand its capabilities through advanced data analytics, greater integration with regional and national partners, and continued investment in intelligent transportation systems to improve safety and keep Nebraska moving.
Originally, each of NDOT’s eight districts had their own local District Operations Centers, which provided localized monitoring and response.
In 2014, seven of the eight DOCs were centralized into one center in Lincoln, while the District 2 DOC in Omaha remained separate due to higher traffic volumes and unique demands. In 2021, the Omaha location officially became the site of the statewide SOC as a fully integrated operations hub for all of Nebraska.
The TMC will be the most connected and responsive iteration yet.
“Rebranding to the Traffic Management Center reflects our evolution from reacting to incidents to proactively managing traffic in the hope of keeping incidents from even occurring,” said Tom Renninger, NDOT Operations Division Head. “This shift means better communication, faster response and safer, more reliable travel across Nebraska’s transportation network.”
