HARTINGTON — Cedar County will once again have a county attorney on the payroll as of May 1.
The county commissioners have offered the position to Edward Matney of South Sioux City.
The deputy county attorney, John Thomas, of Knox County has been filling in after the March 1 resignation of Matt Dreesen.
Matney is originally from South Sioux City and graduated from Sioux City East High School. He attended the University of Nebraska, but graduated from Iowa State University and went on to graduate from Baylor Law School.
Matney has been chief deputy county attorney in Dakota County since 1997. He took one year off to work in a business in Texas and returned last year.
Matney said he became interested in the Cedar County position because it is a part-time position that would also give him time to have a private practice. He indicated he isn’t certain if that practice will be out of Hartington or in the Sioux City area.
His Dakota County position has given him the opportunity to work with several judges who he will also be working with in Cedar County. Matney said they spoke highly of this area and the available position here.
His plans are to relocate to Cedar County. He is single and has two younger sisters and one younger brother in South Sioux City, along with his father.
In other business, commissioners awarded the contract for the wireless security system at the courthouse to Hartington Telecommunications.
The bids of 15 panic buttons, control panel and keypad in the sheriff’s office were within $7 of each other, the lower bid being that of Hartington Telecommunications.
