Trojans tie for top spot at conference meet

Two more Cedar Catholic school records fall

WAYNE - Cedar Catholic used a first-place effort in the final event to tie Battle Creek for the Mid State Conference Track and Field title in the boys’ division at Wayne High School May 2.

The Trojans and Braves went back and forth all day before Cedar’s 1,600-meter relay team of Mason Baller, Hunter Kuchta, Kighter Wortmann and Cooper Hochstein used a 3: 29.57 effort in the event to tie Battle Creek, which finished fourth.

The same quartet in a different order ran to a conference title in the 3,200-meter relay to open the running session on the day after posting a 8:16.07 almost 15 seconds in front of runner-up, Ponca.

“It was kind of a mutual decision to start helping on the 3,200 relay,” said Baller, who also was third in the 100. “I started the season just sprinting but we had a solid team and I was willing to try it out and see if I could get a split and help them out a little bit. It’s working out, I’m not a big fan of running the 800, but if it helps the team, I’ll do it.”

Well, the decision must have been a good choice as Baller and company not only won the 3,200 relay, they broke the school record with a time of 8:16.07, .67 seconds ahead of the team of Carson Arens, Carson Noecker, Matthew Loecker and Nolan Becker who had the previous Cedar record of 8:16.74.

Jared Rutar added 20 points to the team total with wins in the shot put and discus.

He threw the shot 52-08 and hurled the discus 168-06.

Teammate Graham Potts was third in the discus with an effort of 151-07 and fourth in the shot with a throw of 48-feet even. Sam Wiebelhaus made it a 1-3-6 finish in the discus with a 134-11 toss that placed him sixth.

Cooper Hochstein also broke a school record with a 50.89 second-place finish in the 400 meters.

Kighter Wortmann added a secondplace finish in the 800 in 2:01.19, Nolan Heimes placed third in the 300-meter hurdles and fifth in 110-meter high hurdles.

Micah Cattau cleared 12-feet in the pole vault for fourth, Easton Hochstein was fifth in the triple jump and the 400-meter relay squad of Booker and Cooper Hochstein, Baller and Cattau circled the track once in 44.38 to place third.

The Lady Trojans finished ninth in the conference meet with 33 points.

Anisten Wortmann scored over half of the points herself winning the 100-meter dash in 12.36 and winning the 100-hurdles with a time of 14.78 to score 20 points.

Adelyn Reifenrath was second in the long jump with a best of 16-09 and Calley Stewart was fifth in the high jump after clearing the bar at 4-08.

Cedar Catholic’s 400-meter relay team of Evie Freeman, Brynn Bernecker, Shayla Heine and Landry Heimes covered the distance in 52.72 which was good enough for fourth place in the meet.

The Trojans and Lady Trojans will travel to Battle Creek for an invitational on May 7 before the district meet which is scheduled for May 14.
