Wortmann shines with four Norfolk Classic wins, three records

Area athletes turn in impressive marks, bring home hardware

NORFOLK — Anisten Wortmann turned a strong showing into a record-breaking showcase in a matter of hours Thursday at the Norfolk Track and Field Classic at Johnny Carson Field.

The Cedar Catholic junior swept all four of her events, set three meet records and was named the Denny Fuehrer Outstanding Female Athlete.

“It means so much,” Wortmann said. “I wouldn’t be here without my teammates pushing me every day in practice. Ultimately, the glory goes to God because I wouldn’t be here without Him helping me with what I accomplished.”

Wortmann opened her day by winning the 100-meter hurdles in 14.22 seconds, breaking her own meet record from a year ago by nearly six-tenths of a second.

She followed that with another record performance in the 100-meter dash, sprinting to an 11.99 finish to top the previous mark of 12.20 set by former Lady Trojan Sara Reifenrath in 2019.

Wortmann wasn’t done.

She captured the 300 hurdles in 44.24, breaking a meet record that had stood since 1999, and capped her day with a win in the 200-meter dash in 25.05 — just 0.14 seconds shy of another record.

Area athletes added several strong finishes across both divisions.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge’s Boston Brown placed third in both hurdle events behind Wortmann and added a third-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 35-08.75. She also teamed with Kate Tasler, Carlie Kvols and Taelynn Settje to place fourth in the 1,600-meter relay.

Hartington-Newcastle’s Vayda Lippert finished fifth in the 1,600-meter run, while Wynot’s Maleah Heimes took sixth in the high jump, clearing 5-0.

On the boys side, LCC’s Drey Puppe delivered a record-setting performance of his own.

Puppe won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.11 seconds to set a new meet record and added a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles.

“I really don’t think it has hit me yet that I have a record here,” Puppe said. “This was great, but I am not where I want to be yet. I’ll go back to work and keep getting better.”

Cedar Catholic’s Jared Rutar also had a big day in the field events, sweeping both the shot put and discus.

He recorded a throw of 49-5 in the shot and 167-4 in the discus. Teammate Graham Potts added a sixthplace finish in the discus. Hartington-Newcastle’s Will Feilmeier placed second in the 200-meter dash in 23.10 and added a fourth-place finish in the 100 at 11.05.

Cedar Catholic’s Mason Baller took fifth in the 200, while teammates Kighter Wortmann and Hunter Kuchta placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 800.

In the relays, Cedar Catholic’s 3,200-meter team of Kuchta, Baller, Cooper Hochstein and Wortmann claimed the title in 8:22.34. The Trojans’ 1,600 relay team — with the same runners in a different order — finished fourth.

Hartington-Newcastle’s 400 relay team of Aiden Walter, Mason Krause, Maximus McCray and Feilmeier placed fourth in 44.53, just ahead of Cedar Catholic’s team of Booker Hochstein, Cooper Hochstein, Bailer and Micah Cattau, which finished fifth in 44.56.
