HARTINGTON - Members of VFW Post 5283 celebrated the 40th anniversary of their organization at a banquet Saturday evening. About 100 people attended the event.
Veterans were encouraged to actively recruit younger members by guest speaker Jack Armagost, Department Commander. Armagost said the future of veterans’ benefits may depend on the strength of the VFW.
“The government made many of these promises to us 40 to 45 years ago,” Armagost said. “Now they are hoping that we will become so weak as an entity that they won’t have to fulfill the promises. We need a strong membership if we are going to keep what we are entitled to.”
Program emcee Arlan Stratman read a history of the organization and the VFW Auxiliary after the meal.
The Post was organized on January 3, 1946, with 66 charter members, Stratman said. Several of those members were present Saturday night.
Following is a summary of the post history as read by Stratman. It was compiled by Mrs. Dorothy Dendinger.
“The Hartington VFW Post was organized on Jan. 3, 1946 with 66 charter members. The first meetings were held above Lloyd’s Cafe, now Reifert’s Furniture. For a time meetings were held in the old American Legion Hall on North Broadway. In 1949 the Post moved to the bakery basement, part of which is the current Senior Center. In 1961, they moved to the basement of the former Knights of Columbus Hall. In May, 1975, the organization moved to their present location on Highway 15.
The Post provides the Color Guard for Military funerals, football games and parades, both local and at nearby towns. Every year they sponsor the Voice of Democracy Contest. They sponsor and conduct the Memorial Day Services in four cemeteries and they hold the Veteran’s Day programs.

Dump and his wife, Peggy Year, are owners and co-publishers of the Cedar County News and Northeast Neb. News Company, which operates the Coleridge Blade, Randolph Times, Laurel Advocate, Wausa Gazette and Osmond Republican.
Dump was elected Thursday as the new President of the Nebraska Press Association Advertising Service during the group’s 132nd annual state convention at the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln.
His journalism career began 28 years ago when he began working for his hometown newspaper, the Brandon Valley (S.D.) Reporter. Dump and Year purchased the Cedar County News 14 years ago.
Dump becomes just the second Cedar County News Publisher in the newspaper’s 108-year history to be elected as the NPAS President.
Former News Publisher Fred Zimmer led the organization in 1956. Zimmer and another former News Publisher, J.P. O’Furey, were also former Presidents of the Nebraska Press Association. Zimmer guided the Press Association in 1950 and O’Furey was NPA President in 1922.
Only two other Cedar County publishers have ever held one of these two offices. Former Randolph Times publisher Vance Viergutz was Nebraska Press Advertising Service Association president in 1969.
Another former Randolph Times Publisher, Marvin Taylor, was the NPAS President in 1986.
