Randolph tracksters earn medals at Hartington meet

HARTINGTON - The Randolph Cardinal and Lady Cardinal track teams competed in the Trojan Track and Field Invitational on April 14 at the Hartington Community Athletic Complex where Abbey Backer had quite a day.

Backer led the Lady Cardinals to a season-high 41 points in the meet, having a hand in 24 points on the day.

Cedar Catholic won both divisions of the team races with the Trojans posting 155 points and the Lady Trojans scoring 110.

Hartington-Newcastle was second in the boys’ division with 104 with the Cardinals ending up eighth with 17 total points.

Wausa was the runner-up in the girls’ competition with 92 and the Lady Cards were sixth with their 41 points.

Backer swept the long and triple jumps with a leap of 16-05 in the long jump and a best of 34-06.50 in the triple jump, both marks set new school records.

Mabel Ngebeh brought home some hardware in the throwing events using a toss of 101-10 in the discus to place third and a heave of 30-06.50 in the shot which was good enough for fourth.

Emily Gilliland was fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.42 and Brooke Meier placed sixth in the 300 hurdles in 56.99 seconds.

The Lady Cardinal 400-meter relay team of Lilly Kuchta, Gilliland, Aniston Schmidt and Abbey Becker circled the track in 55.12 which placed them fourth while the 1,600-meter team of Schmidt, Rylee Reimers, Lydia Schultz and Gilliland circled the track four times in 4:48.32 which also was good enough for fourth.

Luke Harder tied for first in the high jump after clearing the bar at 6-02, but ended up second after counting his misses before clearing the winning height.

Milo Rayford placed third in the 400-meters with a time of 56.86 seconds and Jaylen Junck was fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 19.24.

Brecken Shearer, Harder, Ty Sievers and Rayford hauled the baton 400 meters in 50.62 seconds which placed them sixth.

Both teams were set to head east to Laurel April 21.
