1931: Laurel’s new Immanuel Lutheran Church dedicated

April 21, 1926

LAUREL — The local lodge of Odd Fellows will have a special meeting Sunday afternoon in honor of the 107th anniversary of the founding of the organization. The meeting will be held at Logan Center church and will be open to everyone. A most cordial invitation is extended to everyone to be present and help make the meeting a great success.

Rev. Spracklen of the Logan Center church will give the talk. He has belonged to the organization for many years and is capable of giving a talk that should be heard by a large crowd. Last year his address was especially fitting for the occasion and this year will be no exception.

The meeting will start at 2 o’clock.

Plan to attend as it will be interesting to everyone and you are assured of a fine address.

LAUREL — A deal was closed Thursday whereby the Carroll Mercantile Company became the owners of the Pete Liewers gents furnishing store at Randolph.

The newly acquired store will be known as the Randolph Mercantile Company. Ted Fishman, brother-inlaw of Nathan Sterling of this place, will manage the store at that point.

Mr. Fishman before coming here was connected with the Milton G. Cooper Dry Goods Company, one of the largest concerns of its kind on the west coast. Mr. Fishman has been in Carroll for the past few weeks helping in the store here and has made many friends here in that time.

Although the stock at Randolph consisted mostly of gents furnishings it is the intention of the owners to turn the store into a general mercantile establishment and it will be run on the same congenial and courteous basis as the store here. The building is being remodeled this week to accommodate the new store.

The senior partner of the two stores, Nathan Sterling, better known as “Nate,” came to Carroll four years ago and was at that time in partnership with Alec Robbin.

LAUREL - A number of years ago the women’s clubs of this city picked out a flower which was designated as the town flower. You know most every state has a flower and a flag and a great seal and the rest of the insignia and so it was decided that Laurel should have a flower. And so the Hydrangea was selected as the blossom that should represent Laurel. Since that time more and more Hydrangeas have been planted by the flower lovers of the town and there is now quite a showing of the beautiful blooms during the summer time. It has been called to our attention that now is the proper time to plant this flower.

It is well worth the care and effort of every flower lover and it will take only a short time for the town to be covered with the officially designated flower. Here is a thought for you flower lovers. Get busy at once and let us all work for a more beautiful Laurel with more flowers, a cleaner place and a town that is known far and wide for its Hydrangeas.

As we understand it they are a hardy plant and one that will do well for the amateur gardener. So let us be loyal to our home town in planning our garden and plant a few Hydrangeas so that Laurel will be known in the years to come as the “City of Hydrangeas.”

LAUREL - The dedication of the new Immanuel Lutheran church of this city will be the outstanding event of the coming week. The services on next Sunday will be carried out as published in our last issue. Everything is in readiness for the occasion and there is no question but that it will be a great day not only for the members of the congregation but the citizens.

The church is a new brick edifice costing in the neighborhood of $25,000 and was erected through the efforts of Rev. E. Wille and the members of his congregation. It is a beautiful structure and would be a credit to towns many times larger than Laurel.

The enterprise of the people of the congregation is appreciated by every loyal Laurel citizen and all rejoice that the new building is now ready for the
