HARTINGTON — Cedar Catholic turned in a dominant performance on its home track, sweeping both the boys and girls titles at the Cedar Catholic Invitational held April 14 at the Hartington Community Complex.
The Trojans rolled to the boys team title with 155 points, easily outdistancing Hartington-Newcastle’s 104. On the girls side, the Lady Trojans totaled 110 points, finishing 18 points ahead of runner-up Wausa.
Cedar’s boys were powered by multiple individual champions and strong relay efforts. Kighter Wortmann led a 1-2-5 finish in the 800-meter run, winning in 2:01.93. Hunter Kuchta was second in 2:05.97 and Brayden Fischer placed fifth in 2:18.69.
Nolan Heimes swept the hurdles, winning the 110-meter highs in 15.77 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 43.54. Joe Bowen captured the 3,200-meter run in 11:13.17 and added a fourthplace finish in the 1,600, while teammate Jeff Heine was third in the 3,200 and sixth in the 1,600.
In the field events, Jared Rutar claimed gold in the discus with a throw of 161-11. Sam Wiebelhaus was third (137-08) and Graham Potts sixth (131-09). Rutar and Potts also added points in the shot put, finishing second and third, respectively.
Mason Baller recorded runner-up finishes in both the 100 (11.32) and 200 (23.54), while Myles Baller was second in the 400 in 56.85. Micah Cattau placed third in the pole vault (11-02) and Keaton Keiser was sixth (10-02).
The Trojans also found success in the relays. The 1,600-meter relay team of Mason Baller, Kuchta, Wortmann and Cooper Hochstein won in 3:36.61, while the 3,200 relay team of Kuchta, Bowen, Wortmann and Cooper Hochstein took first in 8:29.01.
On the girls side, Anisten Wortmann delivered a standout performance, winning four individual titles. She swept the hurdles with victories in the 100 (14.46) and 300 (45.56), and also claimed gold in the 100 (12.18) and 200 (25.22).
Brynn Bernecker added a win in the 800 (2:40.41), with Madison Eickhoff placing third in 2:47.42. Eickhoff and Isabel Rolfes went 1-2 in the 1,600, finishing just over two seconds apart.
In the field events, Calley Stewart placed second in the triple jump (34-01) and fourth in the high jump (4-10). Shayla Heine was third in the triple jump, finishing just a half-inch behind Stewart.
Danielle Eickhoff and Kinleigh Kramer tied in the pole vault at 7-08, finishing fifth and sixth with Eickhoff placing higher on fewer misses.
Cedar also scored in the relays, with the 1,600 team of Brynn Bernecker, Mara Bernecker, Evie Freeman and Madison Eickhoff placing second in 4:34.84. The 400 relay team of Freeman, the Bernecker sisters and Heine finished third in 54.50.
“I was kind of nervous in the beginning, but once the first lap was done it felt good the rest of the way,” said Eickhoff. “I really like the 1,600, if you would have asked me last year I definitely would have said the 800, but the 1,600 is kind of new to me. I like to do new things, I like the challenge.”
Cedar Catholic took part in the LCC meet Tuesday. The Trojans will also travel to Pierce on April 23 and to the Ponca Invitational on April 28.
