April 11, 2001

COLERIDGE — Work on upgrading the water supply system in Coleridge got underway last week as Plumbing & Electric of Hartington began laying the new 6-1/2 inch plastic pipe throughout the town. Work here is being done on West Broadway.

Sargent Drilling started drilling the new water well for the Village of Coleridge. The well was drilled to 200 feet and testing has nearly been completed. The new well is located on West Nebraska Street.

LAUREL — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge School board members accepted a resignation and filled several vacant positions on Monday evening.

Becky Miller, who has been in the school system for eight years, turned in her resignation as the Technology Integration Specialist.

In her letter to LCC School District stakeholders she said the decision was made after much deliberation.

She has been offered an opportunity to advance her career as the Digital Integration Facilitator for Norfolk Public Schools. Miller thanked the teachers, staff, students and members of the community who have made the eight years in the district so wonderful.

COLERIDGE — Work on the Coleridge Area Memorial Plaza began last week. Dirt work started April 11.

The hope is to have the memorial completed before Memorial Day.

The memorial is the brainchild of American Legion Post 114 members who put a plan in place for a “Project Camp” memorial to honor veterans with connections to the Coleridge community. Names of veterans from any era are to be included.

A total amount of $90,000 was needed for the veteran’s memorial, which is being constructed near the corner of Broadway and Main Street on the site of the former hotel in downtown Coleridge.

With a recent donation of $5,000 from Security Bank in Coleridge, and Elroy and Carol Hefner offered financial support for the project when they gave a $25,000 donation as a matching grant to help the American Legion Post 114 reach its fund-raising goal.

Hefner, a 70-year member of the American Legion, was pleased the fund-raising went so quickly.

LAUREL — Laurel City Council members accepted an Economic Development Community Certification award Monday from Nebraska Lt. Gov. Mike Foley.

Laurel was one of the smaller communities to earn the status, Foley said.

“Laurel has proven that a community can be located away from the interstate and still be successful. They have a can-do attitude. The school system is good. It is clear they have entrepreneurship here. People are looking for safe, clean places like this to build their homes. High speed Internet means they can do their jobs anywhere. Covid has moved that advance in technology along,’’ Foley said. “I can’t wait to come back in a year. This project will be a game changer for your community,’’ Foley said.
