Jr. High Bears compete at Hartington track invitational

HARTINGTON — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge showed plenty of balance — and some standout firepower — during the Hartington-Newcastle Junior High Early Bird Relays on April 9 at the Hartington Community Complex.

While the team trophies went elsewhere, the LCC boys and girls both turned in competitive performances, highlighted by a dominant showing in the throwing events on the boys side and strong depth from the girls.

The LCC boys finished third in the team standings with 68 points, fueled largely by the efforts of Foster Stone, who was one of the meet’s top individual performers.

Stone swept the throwing events in convincing fashion, winning the shot put with a toss of 44-9 and the discus with a heave of 142-3 — a mark that stood well ahead of the rest of the field. Teammate Dakota Carter added to the scoring in the shot put, placing third at 35-2.

In the field events, LCC also picked up key points in the high jump, where Alex Kvols cleared 5-0 to tie for third, while Clint Thurston added a sixthplace finish.

On the track, LCC consistently stayed in the mix in the relays. The Bears turned in a strong runner-up finish in the 400 relay (53.30), narrowly missing first, and placed second again in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:16.51).

The 800 relay team also came within a blink of victory, finishing second in 1:55.75 — just hundredths of a second behind Hartington-Newcastle.

Additional points came in the sprint medley, where LCC placed third (2:00.55), and in the 1600 and 3200 relays, where the Bears finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Foster Stone added another scoring effort in the triple jump, placing fifth at 31-5½ to round out a busy and productive day.

On the girls side, LCC finished third in the team race with 52 points, showing its strength particularly in the throwing events.

Stella Graham led the way with a first-place finish in the shot put (24-8), while the Bears placed four athletes in the top six of that event. Ryleigh Loberg took third (22-10), Jacey Folkers was fifth (21-9) and Maya Brummels added a sixth-place finish (21-8).

In the discus, Madison Olson picked up a runner-up finish with a throw of 58-8, giving LCC another strong placement in the field events.

The Bears also scored in the jumps, with Reese Jelinek placing second in the high jump (3-10), while Aliya Detlefsen and Payton Benson finished third and fourth in the triple jump.

On the track, LCC’s relay teams battled throughout the meet. The 400 relay placed sixth (1:01.18), while the 800 relay team finished seventh. The Bears added a fifth-place finish in the sprint medley (2:21.49) and a sixthplace effort in the 3200 relay.
