HARTINGTON — Students from local schools Monday watched tree planting demonstrations and learned about the importance of trees to the environment.

Hartington Tree Board members Tom Moser and Ken Hochstein transplanted two trees from a crowded wind break while the students and Hartington Mayor Gene Burbach looked on. Burbach read an Arbor Day Proclamation and declared it as Tree Planting Week in Hartington.

HARTINGTON — Members of the Drug and Alcohol Task Force expressed outrage at their regular monthly meeting about the recent sentencing of Randy Borgheiinck to three years probation on a felony charge of distribution of a controlled substance. Task Force members said they felt all the work of law enforcement officials went down the drain with the sentence.

Co-chairman Elaine Arens said, “We stressed the importance of the need to investigate illegal drug abuse, and then when somebody is finally picked up and charged, he’s let off with a virtual slap on the hand.”

Virginia Dunn, also a co-chairman, said that although the task force efforts are primarily concerned with education and prevention, the group is only too aware of the deterrent factor of effective law enforcement.

“We were so pleased when the sheriff’s investigations finally began to make a dent in the illegal drug traffic in this county,” Dunn said. “But we wonder how drug pushers will be scared off if all they get is probation, and they even get their vehicle returned, which we understand could have been confiscated according to the state law.”

COLERIDGE — State Sen. Elroy Hefner said he is working with officials from the state and several counties to develop proposals for dealing with jurisdictional problems in accident cases involving alcohol.

Hefner and Ken Payne of the State Attorney General’s Office are meeting this week with several county attorneys from throughout the state to discuss possible legislation. According to Hefner, when an acceptable proposal is reached, he will attempt to amend a priority bill or place it on a bill currently in the Judicial Committee and ask that it be advanced to the floor. If neither route is successful, Hefner said, a new bill will be introduced next year.
