HARTINGTON — A disappointing administrative decision turned a huge celebration into a major let-down for Hartington’s FFA team last week.

The Hartington FFA Chapter entered state competition with an 11-year winning streak. The streak ended when the event’s organizers decided not to present the state sweepstakes award this year.

Hartington agricultural education instructor Russ Diedrichsen was shocked to discover there would be no state champion this year.

“When an official told me there wouldn’t be a sweepstakes winner announced this year, I felt as if our big balloon, ready to burst with excitement, had been deflated,” said Diedrichsen.

HARTINGTON — Not so long ago, a stagnated grain market was accepted in an apathetic manner by producers. For decades, $2 corn made the grain an affordable feed for livestock producers, but recently things have changed dramatically.

In less than a year’s time, the nation’s corn prices have doubled, and grain farmers have finally produced an income off of what they’ve produced.

The Hartington Elevator reported $4.20 a bushel of corn, with the Chicago Board of Trade reporting $4.55 on Tuesday’s market, said elevator manager Jerry Thoene.

LINCOLN — The Cedar County News won nine awards and was named runner-up for the Sweepstakes award honoring the state’s best newspaper at last weekend’s annual meeting of Nebraska Press Association.

All weekly and daily newspapers, regardless of size, are lumped into one category for the Sweepstakes judging.

The Cedar County News won three first place plaques and six second place plaques during Saturday night’s Nebraska Press Association awards banquet.

Cedar County News Editor Rob Dump said the awards are a testament to teamwork.

“Even though one person’s name may appear on the award, our entire office staff contributed in one way or another to each and every award,” Dump said. “We have a very dedicated staff, and I’m glad they have been recognized by our peers across the state.”

HARTINGTON—Cedar County residents were treated with a rare mixture of three seasons last weekend. Over two inches of precipitation fell here. Most of the precipitation came in the form of rain, but some of it came as a surprising late-season snowfall.
