HARTINGTON — Hartington City Council members learned Monday that work to update the track at the Hartington Community Complex could take place as early as this year.
City officials have spent the past two years reviewing options to address the aging, 22-year-old facility. When the complex was originally constructed, community leaders were advised the track surface would have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years.
The council had been considering a full reconstruction of the track — a project estimated to cost between $750,000 and $1 million and extend its life another 20 years.
A more cost-effective alternative is now under consideration. Councilman Roman Sudbeck said two companies are preparing proposals that would involve removing the existing rubber surface and replacing the underlying asphalt at an estimated cost of about $160,000.
“This will be a lot cheaper than a complete rebuild,” Sudbeck said. “Hopefully, this would allow the track to last another five to 10 years. This is the most affordable way to do it.”
