Area girls shine at Early Bird Jr. High track meet

HARTINGTON — Area teams made their presence felt Thursday at the Hartington-Newcastle Early Bird Relays, with Cedar Catholic, Hartington-Newcastle and Wynot all turning in strong performances to headline the junior high meet.

Cedar Catholic set the tone early and often, piling up points across the relays and field events on the way to the team title with 94 points.

The Trojans showed their depth in the relay events, winning the 3200-meter relay behind the quartet of Kynlee Steffen, Tenley Schmit, Rae Noecker and Sylvie Neiman in 11:34.36. Cedar also added a win in the shuttle hurdle relay, where Hadley Dendinger, Aubri Rolfes, Olivia Whitmire and Lucy Steffen clocked a 1:27.17.

Lucy Steffen added another gold in the pole vault, clearing 7-0, while Brooklyn Leise and Peyton Kloster helped lead multiple scoring efforts in the sprint and field events.

Hartington-Newcastle, competing on its home track, finished fourth in the team standings but delivered one of the most balanced efforts of the meet.

The Wildcats were particularly strong in the relays, placing second in both the 1600 and 3200 relays. The 1600 relay team of Stella Sudbeck, Maggie Lippert, Londynn Morten and Brooke Kalin turned in a 4:57.63, while the same group ran 11:45.43 in the 3200 relay.

Hartington-Newcastle also added a runner-up finish in the shuttle hurdle relay and a third-place finish in the 400 relay, showing consistency across the board.

Individually, Maggie Lippert placed among the top finishers in the high jump, while Maci Wudel added points in both the shot put and discus to help round out the Wildcats’ scoring.

Wynot also made its mark with several standout individual performances.

Bryar Hans captured the long jump title with a leap of 15-0, while teammate Taya Gowery won the triple jump with a mark of 30-3.

The Blue Devils were also competitive in the relays, placing fourth in the sprint medley and fifth in the 1600 relay, and added a discus title from Layla Lenzen, who threw 75-2 to lead the field.

Overall, the meet provided an early-season snapshot of area talent, with Cedar Catholic’s depth, Hartington-Newcastle’s balance and Wynot’s individual standouts all on display.
