Cedar Jr. High School boys claim Early Bird title

HARTINGTON — The boys division of the Hartington-Newcastle Early Bird Relays showcased a strong showing from area programs Thursday, with Cedar Catholic, Hartington-Newcastle and Wynot all turning in competitive performances.

Cedar Catholic used its depth to capture the team title with 111 points, pulling away from the field behind a balanced effort in both relays and field events.

The Trojans picked up a key relay win in the sprint medley, where Parker Leise, Grant Klug, Brysn Baller and Connor Eickhoff edged Wakefield in 1:59.09. Cedar also dominated the horizontal jumps, sweeping the top three spots in the triple jump behind Baller (36-7), Alex Pinkelman (34-8) and Klug (33-8).

Hartington-Newcastle turned in a strong runnerup finish in the team standings with 82 points, highlighted by several first-place performances on its home track.

The Wildcats’ 800-meter relay team of Nathan Brummels, Logan Thoene, Rex Lippert and Brody Dickes raced to a narrow victory in 1:55.69, edging LCC by just six-hundredths of a second.

Hartington-Newcastle also claimed gold in the shuttle hurdle relay, where Brody Dickes, Anthony Thoene, Camryn Bruning and Rex Lippert posted a winning time of 1:14.21.

Individually, Caleb Heimes led the Wildcats with a pair of wins, taking the pole vault (8-6) and the long jump (17-8), while Logan Thoene added a first-place finish in the high jump (5-0).

Wynot contributed several solid performances, particularly in the relays and throws.

The Blue Devils placed fifth in the sprint medley relay and added a fourth-place finish from Dysen Heimes in the shot put. Wynot athletes also showed depth across multiple events, consistently finishing in the middle of the pack against a competitive field.
