Wortmann sets a new standard for Cedar track

HARTINGTON — Anisten Wortmann put together a performance for the record books Wednesday — and carried the Cedar Catholic girls right along with her.

Wortmann sprinted, hurdled and powered her way to three individual titles, turning in one of the most dominant all-around efforts of the early season at the Hartington-Newcastle Invitational.

The Cedar Catholic junior opened the day by blazing to a win in the 100-meter dash in 12.05, then came back to win the 400 in 1:02.25 before capping her meet with another gold in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.57.

Those times weren’t just wins — they pushed into record territory, continuing what has quickly become a historic start to the season for Wortmann.

Behind her, the Trojans stacked points across the board. Brynn Bernecker delivered a strong runner-up finish in the 200 (28.19), while teammate Evie Freeman added a sixth-place finish in the same race.

In the middle distances, Madison Eickhoff scored in both the 800 (fourth, 2:45.19) and the 1600 (fifth, 6:27.85), giving Cedar valuable depth in the distance events.

The Trojans were equally strong in relays, narrowly missing gold in the 400 relay. The team of Freeman, Bernecker, Adelyn Reifenrath and Shayla Heine finished second in 53.04 — just three-hundredths of a second behind Tri County NE.

Cedar also added a fourth-place finish in the 1600 relay. In the field events, Calley Stewart cleared 4-10 to take second in the high jump, while Reifenrath added a third-place finish in the long jump (15-10) and scored again in the triple jump.

Overall, the Trojans showed balance in every phase — sprints, distance, relays and field events — but the day clearly belonged to Wortmann.
