PLAINVIEW — The Randolph girls didn’t crack the top half of the team standings Tuesday at the Ray Doerr Track and Field Meet, but there were plenty of encouraging flashes — especially in the field events.
Randolph finished 11th as a team with 15 points, but several individual efforts stood out against a deep field that included meet champion Laurel-Concord- Coleridge and runner-up Norfolk Catholic.
Leading the way was Abbey Backer, who turned in one of the top all-around performances of the day for the Cardinals.
Backer placed third in the triple jump (32-0) — Randolph’s highest finish of the meet — and added a seventh-place effort in the long jump (14-3¾). She also contributed on the track with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash.
Randolph also found success in the throwing events, where Mabel Ngebeh delivered a strong performance with a fifth-place finish in the discus (94-9) — another top-five medal effort. She added a solid day in the shot put as well, leading a group of Cardinal throwers competing in a large field.
On the track, Emily Gilliland turned in a pair of notable runs. She placed sixth in the 400 meters
(1:07.23) and also ran a leg on Randolph’s fourth-place 400-meter relay team, which posted a time of 57.46. Joining Gilliland on that relay were Lilly Kuchta, Aniston Schmidt and Backer, combining for one of Randolph’s best team finishes of the meet.
The Cardinals’ sprint depth showed in the 100 meters, where multiple athletes competed, led by Backer’s top-five finish. Randolph also placed seventh in the
1,600-meter relay, with Gilliland anchoring a group that included Rylee Reimers, Bria Reimers and Meghann Miller.
While team points were hard to come by, Randolph showed balance across events, with entries in sprints, relays, hurdles and throws — a positive sign early in the season.
On the boys side, Randolph finished 14th as a team, but still produced a handful of strong individual efforts.
Luke Harder highlighted the day with a fourth-place finish in the high jump (5-9), putting him among the top field-event performers in the meet. He also added a top-15 finish in the triple jump, showing versatility across events.
In the throws, Stewart Umberger delivered one of Randolph’s best marks of the meet, placing seventh in the shot put (43-3) against a competitive field that featured multiple 40-foot throwers.
On the track, Milo Rayford paced Randolph’s sprint group, turning in a seventh-place finish in the 400 meters (57.79) and competing in both the 100 and
200.
Randolph also saw contributions from Jaylen Junck, who placed in both hurdle events, and competed in the horizontal jumps, while the Cardinals’ 400-meter relay team gained experience against strong competition.
While the team standings didn’t fully reflect it, Randolph’s performances — particularly in the jumps, throws and relays — showed a foundation to build on as the season progresses.
With Backer emerging as a multi-event threat, Ngebeh anchoring the throws and athletes like Harder and Umberger leading the boys, the Cardinals are beginning to carve out strengths that could translate into points as competition continues this spring.
