LAUREL - From far and near, Laurel-Concord High School alumni traveled to participate in the fourth annual Alumni Basketball Tournament hosted by the Laurel Summer Recreation Program. Sixteen teams representing the years 1965 through 1996, competed in the single-elimination tourney held Saturday, April 6. According to organizers, nearly $1,800 was raised through admission and participation fees, and the concession stand. This money, after expenses are taken care of, will assist in the funding of youth activities during the summer.

LAUREL - The Laurel-Concord Athletic Booster Club has met its financial goal of raising over $54,000 for the construction of a proposed community fitness center.

For the past several weeks, the club has worked diligently to raise funds for the center, which was to be built entirely with funds raised by people of the community and surrounding areas of Laurel.

On March 30, the Booster Club solicited the hidden talents of several persons of the community to produce a comedy show/fund-raiser, “Laugh-In,” which was immensely successful. When the club took account of their funds following the show, they found they had raised $37,000: from the show itself, and from generous donations from businesses in the area.

During this past week, another $20,000 was generated for the fitness facility. The City of Laurel has agreed to take $10,000 from its enterprise funds for the facility, ensuring that no tax dollars will be used. Laurel-Concord School District #54 has also agreed to contract an amount, matching that of the city, with the Booster Club.

Since the club has exceeded its goal for expenses, the go-ahead has been given to order the building for the center. Thompson and Huetig, the company contracted for the construction of the building, has assured the Booster Club that they will begin laying cement in mid-May. Completion date of the facility should be around the first part of July.

The finished health and fitness center will be open to the public and will have a west entrance from the outside, one that will be easily accessible to the community. Located at the Laurel-Concord High School, between the old gym and the band room, the facility will house a weight room with various weight training equipment.

The public will be able to use the center’s treadmill and stationary bike, the aerobics workout area, and will benefit from individual assistance on personal fitness programs. This facility will also double as a community center for rehabilitation.
